About the Isle of Skye

Skye is the second largest island in Scotland and is the largest and most northerly island in the Inner Hebrides. The island has some of the most dramatic and challenging mountain terrain in Scotland, and with spectacular cliffs and secluded beaches is the ideal holiday location.

Skye has been inhabited since the Mesolithic period and the signs of early habitation are easily found across the island. In common with the Outer Hebrides, Gaelic is widely spoken and Gaelic culture and heritage pervade the atmosphere wherever you go on Skye.

Measuring only 60 milers from end to end, the deeply dissected coastline measures many hundreds of miles; you are never far from the sea and its influence on Skye.

The proximity of other islands such as Lewis and Harris, Rum and Eigg, make the Isle of Skye an ideal base from which to explore the Outer and Inner Hebrides. With the mainland easily accessible via the Skye Bridge, sites such as Eilean Donan (possibly Scotland’s most photogenic castle), Kintail and the fabulous gardens of Inverewe, are only a short drive away.
